If women didn't exist, all the money in the world would have no meaning.
- Aristotle Onassis
Perhaps you have observed this phenomenon: you are walking through a mall, which appears to be very calm, not too many people, the stores have more employees than customers, not a very busy day. Then you happen upon a shoe store, I mean, a shoe store that caters to ladies footwear fashion. I'm talking high heels, not high tops. But one thing is different about the shoe store, it's teeming with women, and sometimes guys who have that expression of "what the hell am I doing in a ladies shoe store? Wow. That cashier is hot. I wonder what's on TSN."
Needless to say, we walked past. I did not allow my wife to go in, she was forbidden. But this was sort of fascinating. So, let me throw this question out there: what drives women to hoard expensive footwear?
The other behaviors are explainable, if you take an evolutionary biological look at them. Women wear jewellery to attract attention to potential mates. Women wear flattering clothing, sometimes skimpy, because there is an innate drive to have themselves appealing to the opposite gender. Even if other things come to mind about how women adorn themselves, you could explain it in an evolutionary biological scope: they are seeking an assortment of mates from which to select the most fit from. This makes sense.
But I return to the original question: why footwear? Do non-vegetarian men ever look at women's shoes and say "Wow, she's hot. Check out those shoes, bro." Clearly, we do not. There are "other areas" that command attention.
So why footwear? Anyone know of any science that's behind this? Anyone have any ideas or know of a ground breaking Desmond Morris study?

Ask Darwin, he's an expert on women's shoes. He loves them!
The lack of meat consumption by vegetarians sometimes trigger more feminine behaviors in many primate species, humans included. Note in the article that I referred to "non-vegetarian men", usually the two concepts are assumed, but I thought I needed to clarify.
So perhaps Darwin could offer some input as a Subject Matter Expert, if what you say is true "eric" (if that's your real name).
Often when walking anywhere in public with Cindy and passing a group of women I'll catch a member of the group in a full-on, unabashed ogle, and I mean slow and obvious, eyes moving from the shoes up to the midsection, chest and then hair——directed at Cindy.
Women dress for each other. We are completely superfluous to their objectives. If they just dressed for us, the mini skirt would never go out of style.
Eric, I'm just ignoring you...
Gerry, I don't pick on you for being an jerk, why are you bothering me about being a vegetarian?
"many eat the meat but few go to the slaughterhouse" ––Rep. Andrew Jacobs
The women passing by are probably thinking 'that father and daughter must be out shopping for school supplies'.
As they are eyeing up my "daughter". Sure.
Hey, if Tom Cruise (your hero, apparently) can date a younger woman, so can I.
I must confess to goading my Mac brother. I was hoping for a scientific systematic dismantling of my callous anti-vegetarian remark. But all I get is a quote from some politician? Super D, what has happened to you, man?
Gerry, you inspired me to write it down in my own blog. My comments are too long anyways. I'm tired of defending vegetarianism. It is not a cause I'm promoting, just something I do and keep to myself. But if you want to argue about, come on over!
No need to defend, there is no persecution. You can sheath your sword. But I look forward to your blog article.
But my initial question about women's desire to adorn themselves in something that the opposite gender is oblivious to still stands.
I watched Sex in the City last night and the prissy one was getting free $500 shoes from a place if she let the shoe-fetish saleguy guy give her a free foot massage. So it looks like women will prostitute themselves for shoes? This is much deeper than it seems...
I happened upon an anthropological explanation for this. Women's love of shoes may come from the innate drive to have their legs look shapely, this attracting potential mates who are looking for a healthy specimen. In high heels, women's calves are exagerated slightly, and so are their appearances of height, making them look healthier for mating. The rest of this shoe lust may just be a bi-product of this.
You all buy this spin on this question?
I think you are right. When Darwin wears heels his calves do look more feminine and the added height has a slimming effect for his figure.
Look, I don't wear them, but the picture you just created speaks more of you than me. It is weird and we should all just move on...
Hey, just an obversation. But I agree with your point to move on.
