Good thing he apologized.

With this whole pope thing, here's the sequence of events as I see it...

(1) Pope quotes 600 year old text: "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached".

(2) Muslims protest this quote alleging that Mohammed brought evil by burning pope in effigy.

One prominent Islamic body, the Mujahideen Shura Council, says "(May) God enable us to slit their throats, and make their money..."

(3) An Italian Nun is hunted down and shot dead by protestor

(4) Muslim protests escalate worldwide, churches in West Bank attacked.

(5) Pope offers apology, stating his true wish that he did not intend to offend, rather engage a wider discussion of religion and violence.

What was that quote again?

"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached"

Good thing the Pope apologized for quoting that text, because that quote was way off!

From CBC News World

The attackers shot the nun three times in the back at the women and children's hospital in the south of the city before fleeing the scene.

It is unclear if the shooting is connected with strong criticism by a radical Somali cleric about the Pope's recent comments on Islam.

Sister Leonella had worked in Africa for nearly 40 years, her family said.

True enough. However, there would appear to be no other motivation for this guy to shoot her. I hear that he's been arrested, so more should become clearer later on.

And everyone was pissed at Sinead O' Connor for ripping up a snapshot. I think we should all stop quoting 600 year old (or older) texts—it only makes things worse.

Has the pope ever heard of the crusades? A lot of fun-loving truly caring Christians took part in them.

The Pope should try reading his own Bible before he starts pointing the finger.

I disagree that this nun being shot dead is just like when Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the Pope.
I'm not a Catholic, not what you would call a "Christian", we don't go to church, we're in the public school system, my offspring have never been baptized.

But a Nun being shot dead is bad, even with the Pope's remarks.

But back to the thrust of my original post. What is pleasantly surprizing is some Muslim clerics are accepting the Pope's apology. What we have yet to see is Muslim denouncing of the violence, and the Al Qaeda threats of a "response". Will this come soon?

My comment about Sinead is just to say that the furor she caused by simply ripping up a photo on tv was considered quite the anti-Catholic statement at the time, but shooting a nun, burning a pope doll and calling for futher bloodshed is a far more brazen anti-Catholic statement.

I prefer Sinead's way.

yeah, she's pretty hot for a lesbo...

Gerry's not Catholic? Sinead is a lesbian? My whole world has just been turned upside down.

Gerry is a true Catholic, just catholic enough to look down his nose at the other religions of the world and feel his story-telling bible / church is superior. Just catholic enough to commit every sin in the book and go to confession to relieve himself of all guilt associated with his dastardly deads.

And Sinead would look not-so-lesbo with some hair and makeup.

Nope, not me. Although religions (including atheism) are a source of fascination, I do not claim membership to any of them.

Atheism is not a religion, G, no matter what they say in Christian sermons. Atheism is the profound absence of faith in any god. An atheist will simply say "I do not believe in Jesus, Allah, Ganesh, Mohammad, Budha, Jehovah, the Pope, The Book of Mormon, and so on."

The critics of atheism, and there are many, will say "The atheist believes there is no god." which, using the term "believes" implies that it takes faith and faith implies religion. In truth, atheism is simply the absence of faith.

I'll give you that. Atheism is not a religion, it is a complete rejection of the concept of a higher being.
However, to say that it is merely a non-belief in god(s) is a major miscalculation. There are many well-run atheist websites, there are meeting groups in most major cities in North America, and they have a major political lobby group in the US. They are a well-oiled machine, not unlike a religion, and therefore a source of fascination with me. That is what I intended to say
So, yes, you are 100% correct about it not being a religion, my parentheses were misplaced. However, I do not underestimate their political savy, and observe with genuine interest.
